ROMAN TOUR (OUM TEBOUL/TUNISIA ENTRY)

Itinerary

Arriving in Oum Teboul, Algeria’s northeastern border crossing from Tunisia, your journey begins on two wheels with the Mediterranean breeze at your back. Your first stop is Annaba — the “Jewel of the East,” once known as Bône — a coastal city steeped in Roman history and framed by stunning beaches.

From there, you ride southwest toward Guelma, ancient Calama, home to a remarkably preserved 4,500-seat Roman theater that still echoes the grandeur of antiquity. Continuing south, the road leads you into the breathtaking cliffside city of Constantine — once Cirta, capital of the Numidian kingdom — dramatically suspended over deep gorges.

Turning slightly west, you arrive at the extraordinary Roman ruins of Djemila, where the Temple of Severus and the Arch of Caracalla stand as timeless monuments. The journey then carries you onward to Sétif, the historic “city on the hill.”

Now the landscape begins to transform.

Over the next two days, you descend toward the edge of the Sahara, riding into Bou Saâda — the “City of Happiness” and gateway to the desert. From there, continue to Ouled Djellal for an authentic local experience — a true taste of the Sahara.

Turning northeast, the adventure intensifies as you ride through the dramatic Ghoufi Canyon, a spectacular landscape carved into the earth itself. This leads you to one of North Africa’s greatest treasures: Timgad — often called the “Pompeii of North Africa” — an astonishingly well-preserved Roman city founded by Emperor Trajan.

With fuel still in your tank, your final and longest stretch takes you back toward your starting region — but not before a stop at Medghacen, the ancient Numidian royal mausoleum dating back to the 3rd century BCE. Your journey concludes in El Kala — the “City of Coral,” where the Mediterranean returns to greet you.

A perfect and unforgettable finale to your Roman desert adventure.
